A powerful nor'easter is battering the US East Coast, leading to widespread flooding, significant power outages, and major travel disruptions. The storm, which stretches from Washington D.C. to Maine, has forced airlines to cancel over 400 flights and left more than 100,000 homes and businesses without electricity at its peak.
As of Saturday evening, over 73,000 customers remained without power across Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania, with New York and Connecticut each reporting more than 20,000 outages. Earlier in the day, combined outages in four states exceeded 100,000.
Flooding has inundated roads and submerged neighborhoods along the Jersey Shore, prompting voluntary evacuations in some communities. The storm also led to the postponement of an AC/DC concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Flight tracker FlightAware reported 445 flight cancellations and 3,016 delays on Saturday.
The National Weather Service has issued coastal flood warnings, anticipating continued heavy rain, strong winds, and rip currents through Monday. Governors in New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency, while Connecticut activated its Emergency Operations Center. In Edgewater, New Jersey, emergency crews evacuated residents from a waterside hotel due to rising floodwaters. Similar flooding was reported in other Jersey Shore communities and parts of Queens, New York. Wind gusts have exceeded 50 mph in several locations, increasing the risk of falling trees and downed power lines.
