The conclusion of Nepal's search operations highlights the ongoing uncertainty for families of the 56 missing Ukrainian citizens, impacting their ability to finalize administrative and financial matters related to their loved ones.
Nepal has concluded its active search and rescue efforts for victims of the devastating flash floods that occurred on Aug. 26, following a Himalayan glacier collapse. According to Ukraine's Foreign Ministry, 56 Ukrainian citizens remain missing. The floods resulted in at least 1,455 confirmed deaths and left over 5,200 people unaccounted for.
Of the missing Ukrainians, 46 were part of a tour group that lost contact when the flooding began. Despite over 40 days of rescue and identification efforts, none of the missing Ukrainians have been found or identified. While no official reports confirm Ukrainian deaths, Nepalese authorities are proceeding with legal measures to officially declare missing individuals as deceased. This process will enable families to complete administrative tasks, such as filing life insurance claims, in Ukraine. The Ukrainian embassy in India is reportedly working with authorities on the necessary documentation, and the Ukrainian National Police is compiling DNA profiles of those missing to share with Nepalese officials.
