The Navy's purchasing focus has also shifted, with a preference for companies in Series D through F funding stages, a change from its previous practice of funding early-stage research. This shift aims to hand over early-stage development to commercial investors.
Recent acquisitions highlighted by Fanelli include a $562 million contract for the MQ-25 Stingray autonomous refueling drone, edge compute hardware from Armada, inspection services from Gecko Robotics, and the implementation of Domino Data Lab for its machine learning pipeline. In a notable case, the Navy replaced a delayed shipboard camera system with commercial alternatives from Applied Intuition, significantly reducing the project timeline and expanding its deployment.
Fanelli outlined five broad categories of prioritized technology areas: applied AI, quantum information science, advanced networking, electromagnetic spectrum operations, and digital engineering and interoperability. He emphasized that these priorities are not funding commitments but serve as a roadmap for industry engagement.
