Myanmar's junta chief-turned-president Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to make an official visit to Vietnam from September 4 to 6. The trip, at the invitation of Vietnamese President To Lam, marks his seventh foreign visit since assuming the presidency this year, as he seeks to bolster international legitimacy and regional re-engagement.
During his visit, Min Aung Hlaing will engage in bilateral talks with To Lam and meet with Vietnam's prime minister and National Assembly president, according to Myanmar state media. He is also slated to attend a Myanmar-Vietnam business forum and meet with representatives of economic organizations.
The visit to Vietnam follows a series of recent foreign trips by Min Aung Hlaing, including to Russia and Thailand in August, underscoring his administration's efforts to deepen overseas ties. Despite these efforts, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has continued to exclude Myanmar's political representatives from its summits. This exclusion is due to the junta's failure to implement ASEAN's peace plan aimed at resolving the civil war that erupted after the 2021 coup, with ASEAN permitting only non-political participation from Myanmar.
