Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will attend events related to a Pacific Islands Forum summit in Palau, aiming to deepen partnerships and discuss regional peace and stability.
Taiwan's participation in the summit highlights its efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and counter China's growing influence in the strategically important Pacific region, impacting regional stability and alliances.
Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is scheduled to attend events connected to a significant summit of Pacific island nation leaders in Palau, beginning next week. His office confirmed the visit, stating Lin will depart for Palau on Thursday and remain for a week. During his stay, Lin will participate in side events, including a dialogue meeting hosted by the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat and the Pacific Prosperity Exhibit. The minister also plans to meet with Taiwan's diplomatic allies in the Pacific and representatives from other friendly nations. These meetings are intended to foster deeper partnerships between Taiwan and the Pacific island countries, with a focus on jointly upholding peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific region. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has been actively increasing its influence in the Pacific through infrastructure financing, diplomatic engagement, and security cooperation, raising concerns among traditional partners like Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. This strategic competition has led to a gradual reduction in the number of Pacific island countries maintaining formal diplomatic ties with Taipei, with only Palau, Tuvalu, and the Marshall Islands currently remaining.
