Bangladesh PM Rahman likely to visit India Aug. 23-25

The visit comes as the two South Asian neighbors work to mend relations that have been strained since the 2024 ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Dhaka has requested India to extradite Hasina.

Rahman's six-month-old government has aimed for good relations with India since coming to power, and discussions about his potential visit to New Delhi have been ongoing for weeks. However, Bangladesh indicated last week that a more favorable diplomatic environment was necessary for the trip, shortly after Hasina participated in a media event that Dhaka condemned.

Hasina, who fled Bangladesh after protests against her government, was sentenced to death in absentia in November for ordering a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising. She has denied the charges, labeling them politically motivated, and has stated her intention to return to Bangladesh in December.
