Meta unveils new VR glasses with IMAX compatibility, starting at $1,299.99

Meta is re-entering the virtual reality market with its new Meta VR Glasses, unveiled at the company's Connect event. The company aims to make VR more accessible and entertainment-focused with a significantly lighter design and advanced display technology. These new glasses are substantially lighter than previous Meta headsets, featuring a magnesium alloy construction and a form factor resembling normal glasses. They are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor and a separate computing puck that serves as the battery, allowing for on-the-go use.

The Meta VR Glasses are equipped with micro-OLED panels that deliver a 5K Infinite Display with a resolution of 37 pixels per degree, along with support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio. A key feature highlighted by Meta is the glasses' IMAX Enhanced certification, positioning them as a device for experiencing expanded aspect ratios in films. The company also announced a partnership with Disney, enabling Disney+ subscribers to stream select movies, including Marvel titles, in 3D with immersive environments and spatial audio starting in November.

Additionally, the glasses will include Meta AI, an integrated virtual assistant that can be controlled via voice commands or hand gestures, allowing users to perform tasks such as starting a movie. Meta plans to release the glasses next spring, with a starting price of $1,299.99.
