Meta has launched Pocket, a mobile application designed to simplify game development by allowing users to create interactive 'gizmos' solely through text prompts. This AI-powered tool aims to make game creation accessible to individuals without any coding experience, effectively upending traditional software development workflows.
Users interact with Pocket by typing descriptions of their game ideas into a text box. The AI then generates a functional prototype, often matching the user's vision with surprising accuracy. The author found that the process, which would typically take hours for a novice coder, could be accomplished in minutes. The AI also sometimes added unexpected features, such as explodable targets or UI elements, that were not explicitly requested.
Over the course of a week, the author used Pocket to develop prototypes for a 'sling shot' style game and an arcade juggling game. Through more than 100 prompts, they were able to iteratively refine game mechanics, add new features like enemy types and scoring systems, and adjust various parameters. While most prompts yielded the desired results, some required further clarification or resulted in minor issues that could be reverted.
The app also includes an 'Ideas' tab that suggests potential feature sets to users, though the relevance of these suggestions varied. The created 'gizmos' can be shared within the Pocket platform, complete with social media features like likes, comments, and reposts, creating a walled-garden environment for these AI-generated creations.
