A judge has suspended criminal proceedings against Jeanine John Taele, 38, a former U.S. Marine found with a loaded gun near President Donald Trump's golf course in Los Angeles. Judge John Lonergan of the Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled Taele unfit to face weapons violation charges and ordered a mental health evaluation to determine if proceedings can resume. Taele appeared in court wearing a suicide prevention gown, and his attorney argued he was unable to understand or participate in the hearing. Prosecutors had previously stated that Taele was found with ammunition on his person and a loaded firearm in his pickup truck at the Trump National Golf Club on August 5, days before Trump was scheduled to speak at a fundraiser. Investigators also discovered approximately 200 pages of Taele's writings, which reportedly included schedules for Melania Trump and Secret Service members, as well as plans for surviving "off the grid." Taele, who served in the Marines from 2008 to 2016 and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, will remain in custody pending the evaluation, with a hearing set for September 9.
