India is taking a more direct role in efforts to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, engaging both sides on issues including shipping and reducing hostilities, Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar has said.
Speaking at a security conference over the weekend, Jaishankar said India in recent months has become “a little bit more involved beyond advocacy.” The comments point to a more active role for New Delhi after years of taking a cautious approach to the war.
Jaishankar said New Delhi is discussing Black Sea shipping safety, grain and energy exports and other concerns with both Moscow and Kyiv. He added that India is “going beyond that to cover some immediate concerns which both of them (Russia and Ukraine) have on grain exports, energy exports, non-attack possibilities. Those are ongoing conversations right now.”
