Alef Aeronautics, a startup that has been developing flying cars since 2015, has posted a video showcasing its test model, aiming to highlight its progress ahead of Tesla's planned demonstration of its flying Roadster. CEO Jim Dukhovny stated that the company has logged approximately 1,000 flights and hopes to deliver its first vehicle by next year, with an anticipated price tag of $300,000.
While Tesla plans to start production of its Roadster with a flight system in 2028, Dukhovny acknowledged that the current cost of flying cars is prohibitive, even for himself. He anticipates that mass production could eventually lower the cost to under $25,000.
Experts like Alexandre Bayen, a professor at UC Berkeley, suggest that while the technology is advancing, the primary challenges lie in establishing a reliable transit system, regulations, and public acceptance. Bayen believes widespread use in dense urban areas is unlikely in the near future, envisioning early applications for wealthy individuals in remote locations or for short, specialized commutes.
