Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) is expanding into battery swapping and energy storage to counter price wars and profitability pressures. The company is forming alliances, including a recent agreement with BAIC to deepen battery-swapping cooperation and build a unified ecosystem. Huawei-affiliated Yinwang Intelligent Technology is also collaborating with CATL to develop a smart battery swap system, aiming to enable autonomous battery swaps for EVs equipped with Huawei's intelligent driving system. CATL had 2,520 EVOGO swap stations in 200 cities as of September 30, with a target of 3,000 by year-end. However, vehicle development has lagged station expansion, with most EVOGO-compatible models targeting commercial fleets. New partnerships are expected to accelerate the rollout of battery-swappable EVs for private users. Nio, a leader in consumer battery swapping, operated 4,186 stations and has partnered with several automakers, though compatible vehicles have yet to launch widely. The industry faces challenges including high capital expenditure, long payback cycles, battery incompatibility, and low private motorist adoption.
