Fairphone Gen 6+ aims for longevity with modular, repairable design

Fairphone, a Dutch company, has entered the US market with its new $650 Fairphone Gen 6+. The smartphone is engineered for longevity and ease of repair, a departure from the industry standard of glued-together, less serviceable devices. Fairphone CTO Chandler Hatton stated the company's goal is to enable users to "fully own" their devices and use them for at least five years, a key performance indicator for the company.

The design philosophy behind the Fairphone Gen 6+ prioritizes sustainability by avoiding conflict minerals, utilizing recycled materials, and ensuring fair wages for workers. Unlike many modern smartphones that are difficult to open, the Gen 6+ can be fully disassembled in about 20 minutes using a single included T5 Torx screwdriver. This allows for the user replacement of 12 different components, including the battery, display, camera modules, and USB-C port, thereby reducing electronic waste and potential repair costs.

While the modular design results in a slightly thicker phone, Fairphone emphasizes its commitment to durability through rigorous testing of disassembly and reassembly processes. The internal structure is designed to be orderly, with components held by simple cable connectors. The company aims to counter the industry's trend of planned obsolescence by offering a device built to last, with batteries designed to be easily replaced after approximately three years of use, extending the overall lifespan of the phone.
