The European Union's naval mission, Operation IRINI, intercepted the oil tanker MV Sun in the Mediterranean Sea on August 30, suspecting it of operating under a false flag and violating international maritime law. Kaja Kallas, the EU's top diplomat, confirmed the boarding, noting it was the sixth such interception by EU naval operations. This action follows the bloc's recent decision to expand its authority to intercept shadow fleet vessels, not only in the Mediterranean but also in the Indian Ocean.
Kallas emphasized that these measures are crucial for cutting off Russia's illegal oil sales, which she described as a critical lifeline for its war in Ukraine. The EU has so far sanctioned 673 ships associated with Russia's shadow fleet and is preparing a new sanctions package. Discussions on further actions against the shadow fleet are scheduled to take place when EU defense ministers convene in Ireland on September 1.
