AI-native mortgage company Elio Mortgage launched on Tuesday, securing $5.1 million in preseed funding. The funding round was co-led by Motive Partners and Social Leverage, with participation from angel investor Jeff Horing, co-founder and managing director of Insight Partners. Elio aims to transform the mortgage origination process by leveraging artificial intelligence to manage multiple stages of the workflow, rather than focusing on individual tasks. The company was co-founded by Oren Michaely, who has a background in AI and engineering from Microsoft and Motive Partners, and Arad Lev Ari, who brings experience from real estate investing and investment banking at KKR and Deutsche Bank.
The capital infusion will be used to further develop Elio's AI-native platform, expand its licensed mortgage operations nationwide, and recruit loan officers to grow its brokerage business. Elio plans to offer its mortgage services through financial advisers, real estate agents, homebuilders, and owners of single-family rental portfolios, enabling these partners to provide financing without operating their own mortgage businesses. Michaely stated that the mortgage industry has seen little change in origination processes despite years of digitization, and Elio intends to use AI to redefine the division of labor between humans and technology, thereby reducing origination costs and improving the borrower experience.
Harsh Govil of Motive Partners noted that AI-native financial services companies are increasingly coordinating work across their businesses, a shift Elio represents in the mortgage sector. Matt Ober of Social Leverage highlighted Elio's combination of AI with an embedded distribution strategy. Elio's launch occurs amidst growing competition in the mortgage technology space, with companies like Ralo and Copperlane also branding themselves as AI-native solutions. Ralo recently raised $2.9 million in seed funding, while Copperlane secured $4.1 million in seed funding for its AI mortgage loan officer, Penny.
