Life sciences firm Danaher announced plans to launch its first AI-powered autonomous research lab, designed to accelerate drug discovery and development. The lab, expected to operate at scale in early 2027, will integrate AI, robotics, and technologies from various Danaher companies to create custom antibodies and molecular tools.

The development signifies a significant step in applying AI and automation to accelerate drug discovery and the creation of molecular tools, potentially leading to faster breakthroughs in life sciences research and development.
Life sciences company Danaher announced plans to launch its first AI-powered autonomous research lab, designed to accelerate drug discovery and development. The lab, expected to operate at scale in early 2027, will integrate artificial intelligence, robotics, and technologies from various Danaher operating companies into a connected workflow.
The initiative aims to make the discovery of custom antibodies and other molecular tools up to eight times faster and increase annual reagent generation by tenfold. According to JC Gutierrez-Ramos, chief science officer of Danaher, this will free up scientists to focus on more complex challenges requiring human insight.
The lab operates on a continuous design-make-test-learn loop, where AI helps create new molecules, which are then built, tested, and their results fed back into the model to improve subsequent designs. This process is based at Abcam, a Danaher company, and incorporates technologies from other Danaher entities including Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, Integrated DNA Technologies, and Molecular Devices, with automation support from Automata.
Julie Sawyer Montgomery, President and Chief Executive Officer of Danaher, stated that the autonomous lab reflects the company's ability to accelerate the journey from discovery to impact by applying its science, technology, and culture of continuous improvement. This lab is the first step in a broader Danaher program to create a fleet of smart instruments, integrated workflows, and autonomous labs to speed up scientific research.
