China has put forward Song Li, a senior public health official, as its nominee to lead the World Health Organization, succeeding the incumbent director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The nomination was confirmed by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
Mao stated that China believes Song Li's leadership would help the WHO play a more active role in improving global health and wellbeing, and that the nomination demonstrates China's support for multilateralism.
