Beijing reshuffles provincial party chiefs in western regions

Hu Changsheng has been appointed as the new Party Secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Region, succeeding Wang Junzheng. Hu, who is 62, previously served as the party secretary of Gansu province since 2022. His appointment places him as the top Communist Party official in the strategically sensitive region, where Beijing prioritizes political stability, ethnic unity, and control over religious affairs.

In a broader reshuffle, Wu Xiaojun has moved from Qinghai to become the Party Secretary of Gansu province. Luo Dongchuan, the former governor of Qinghai, will now take over as the province's party secretary. The Central Committee announced these changes via state media, describing them as routine personnel adjustments.

Upon assuming his new role in Lhasa, Hu Changsheng pledged absolute loyalty to the Communist Party. He stated his commitment to maintaining stability, strengthening ethnic unity, intensifying efforts against separatism, and enhancing the "rule-of-law-based management" of religious affairs in Tibet. Hu has a career spanning over three decades, with previous senior positions in Sichuan, Qinghai, Fujian, and Xiamen.
