Air pollution is linked to an increased risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts, according to international research. While environmental pollution is known to affect mental health, its specific role in suicide risk has been less understood.
Scientists at Queen’s University Belfast conducted a meta-analysis of 29 studies, finding that exposure to airborne small particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide was associated with a higher risk of death by suicide, suicide attempts, and suicidal ideation. A further analysis of 16 studies suggested that other air pollutants like sulphur dioxide and ozone, along with noise pollution, also correlated with increased suicide risk, though evidence for light and water pollution was inconclusive.
The authors, whose findings were published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, suggested that environmental pollution should be considered in suicide prevention strategies, viewing suicide prevention as a public health issue. They stated that integrating environmental health into mental health policy through cross-sectoral collaboration and pollution reduction could significantly reduce suicide risk and improve population mental wellbeing.
However, other experts urged caution. Dr. Jess Moody of Samaritans acknowledged the complexity of suicide causes and the importance of environment, particularly living conditions, in suicide risk. Dr. Jon Van Niekerk of the Royal College of Psychiatrists pointed out that the research shows an association, not necessarily causation, and that air pollution is often linked to other factors like socioeconomic deprivation and urban living. Dr. Rosie Cornish and Dr. Stephen Burgess, both from the University of Bristol and University of Cambridge respectively, echoed these concerns, emphasizing that correlation does not imply causation and that reducing pollution might not directly prevent suicides if it's not the direct cause.
