US, Denmark and Greenland to sign Arctic security deal after months-long standoff

The United States, Greenland and Denmark are set to sign a new security pact at the UN General Assembly. The deal could draw a line under months of pressure from President Donald Trump for greater US control over the strategically vital Arctic island. A 1951 US-Danish pact had gave American forces access to agreed defence areas across Greenland. Mr Trump says the new deal gives the US a permanent role in Greenland’s security, including keeping adversaries from setting up bases. Both Nuuk and Copenhagen insist the agreement does not change who decides Greenland's future. Danish officials say the island’s sovereignty and its right to self-determination remain intact.
