Companies found responsible for transboundary haze could be fined up to S$20 million — 10 times the current maximum. New laws have been passed to impose tougher penalties, including restricted business dealings with suspected offenders and the ability to act even before haze reaches Singapore. Those who breach restrictions will face fines of up to S$1 million for each offence, plus an additional S$100,000 for each day the breach continues. 24 MPs spoke in support of the Bill but also raised various concerns, including the potential impact on businesses and supply chains, whether firms could face restrictions before being found guilty of wrongdoing, as well as the additional compliance costs they may have to bear. Sabrina Ng and Natalie Ong report.
