Xi Jinping to visit Washington for talks with Donald Trump on trade, AI, and Taiwan

According to a White House spokesperson, Xi's meeting with Trump has been confirmed, but details about his itinerary remain unclear. Federal agencies are still preparing briefing materials for Trump. It is uncertain if human rights will be a topic of discussion, a frequent point raised by past American presidents.

The meeting was initiated when Trump invited Xi to Washington for an official state dinner during his trip to China in May. During that visit, both leaders promised to maintain a stable relationship and the current trade truce. However, the truce has not prevented economic actions between the countries. In July, the U.S. banned imports of Chinese humanoid robots, leading China to retaliate with controls on drone exports to the U.S. and bans on six American entities.

Craig Singleton, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies China Program, noted that several commitments from the May summit remain unfulfilled, including China easing access to rare earth minerals and increasing agricultural purchases. Singleton stated that "China is still using rare earths and other supply chain dependencies as leverage against us, and Washington is still tightening restrictions across technology, infrastructure and economic security."

Analysts anticipate the upcoming meeting may focus more on pageantry than substantive outcomes, given the limited areas for meaningful transactions. The Trump administration is expected to reciprocate the lavish reception Trump received in Beijing. The White House views these meetings as opportunities for repeated engagement, suggesting each encounter does not need to yield a major agreement.
