Alphabet-owned Waymo has begun offering its autonomous robotaxi service to the public in Las Vegas, Nevada, a few weeks after receiving final approval from state transportation regulators. The company is inviting the public on a rolling basis, following a playbook used in 14 other cities. Initially, Waymo will deploy dozens of its new Ojai minivan robotaxis in an area including the Strip south of Highway 589 and into Boulder Junction, with plans to scale the fleet and service area over time. Members of the public must request an invite to gain access, with full public access typically following within a month or two.
Las Vegas is Waymo's 15th market and a competitive one, with Tesla, Zoox, and Motional also planning to launch commercial robotaxi services. Waymo has been authorized to operate up to 1,000 autonomous vehicles in Clark County over the next year, while Tesla is permitted to deploy up to 5,000 and Uber up to 1,000 through partnerships. Waymo currently operates a fleet of over 4,000 robotaxis across more than a dozen cities.
