Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is preparing for a substantial expansion, with projected investments ranging from 200 billion to 300 billion yen ($1.26 billion to $1.88 billion). This significant development marks the first expansion of the theme park's grounds since its establishment in 2001. Sources indicate that USJ is expected to finalize a land lease agreement with Osaka city around 2028 for this expansion.
Previously, USJ made a substantial investment of 60 billion yen ($545 million) in its Super Nintendo World attraction, which opened after pandemic-related delays. This immersive area, based on Nintendo's popular Mario franchise, features interactive elements and rides like 'Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge' and 'Yoshi's Adventure'. The Super Nintendo World aims to leverage Nintendo's broad appeal to drive repeat visits and bolster USJ's competitive position against rivals like Disney.
