Japanese streaming service U-Next and U.S. media giant NBCUniversal have announced a comprehensive strategic alliance focused on the Japanese market. The partnership, effective from October, will see NBCUniversal's global streaming brand, Universal+, integrated into U-Next's platform. This collaboration extends beyond content distribution to include potential joint ventures with Universal Studios Japan, co-marketing initiatives, and live event collaborations.
U-Next, which boasts over 5.2 million paid subscribers and holds the second-largest market share in Japan's subscription video-on-demand sector, aims to evolve into a platform connecting Japanese content with the global entertainment market. NBCUniversal, with its extensive portfolio including Universal Pictures, Peacock, and theme parks, sees this alliance as a crucial step in maximizing its intellectual property value in Japan and expanding its premium content offerings in the region.
The agreement also paves the way for U-Next to leverage NBCUniversal's global network, including platforms like Peacock and Universal+ in Latin America, to promote Japanese TV dramas, anime, films, and U-Next original works internationally. This move is expected to accelerate the global expansion of Japanese content and enhance the U-Next brand's international visibility.
Both companies expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. Chris Taylor of NBCUniversal highlighted the innovative and comprehensive nature of the alliance, emphasizing its significance as the first full-scale launch of Universal+ in the Asia-Pacific region. Tenshin Tsutsumi of U-Next stated his pleasure in forging this strategic partnership, underscoring the shared vision for building a new entertainment model in Japan.
