The United Kingdom is set to utilize data from the Ukrainian battlefield to train artificial intelligence systems aimed at enhancing the security of critical national infrastructure. This collaboration, established through a deal between London and Kyiv, will involve using data from Ukraine's Avengers AI lab to develop AI models capable of identifying and deterring threats from protesters and foreign states targeting defense sites, railways, and energy plants.
Under the agreement, private companies will also be granted access to this extensive dataset, marking the first such arrangement in the UK. The initiative is designed to bolster national security and foster growth within the British AI sector. A pilot project is planned for a UK defense site, employing AI-optimized sensors embedded in buried fiber-optic cables to detect various types of movement. If successful, the technology could be extended to protect airports, prisons, and other essential infrastructure.
Three British AI companies—Sintela, Mind Foundry, and Skyral—have already received approval for pilot projects. Sintela, a company specializing in fiber-optic sensors, has a prior deal with the U.S. administration for border surveillance. The partnership with Ukraine's AI lab will allow new UK security systems to be trained on operational drone datasets, strike mission footage, and flight profiles, potentially including intelligence on Russian sabotage attempts against Ukrainian infrastructure. This military data, accumulated over four years, offers a more comprehensive picture than previously available from open-source intelligence alone.
Ministry of Defence sources indicated that the AI models are intended to predict threats to infrastructure, including from protesters, not solely from hostile states. Prime Minister Andy Burnham highlighted the opportunity for British companies to combine their AI expertise with Ukraine's battlefield data to accelerate the development of capabilities that strengthen national security and protect critical infrastructure. However, Professor Steven Murdoch of University College London noted that technologies for detecting movement from fiber-optic cable sensors have existed for decades, questioning the unique refinement offered by Ukrainian data. He acknowledged a plausible scenario where the data could improve prediction capabilities for specific threats not found in public datasets. Ukraine's data is considered valuable for its insights into new threats that Western European countries might face, particularly concerning drone technology.
