The event highlights the ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and the press, even as the President engages in traditional White House events. The announcement of Netanyahu's visit signals continued diplomatic engagement amidst regional complexities.
US President Donald Trump marked his return to the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Friday night, delivering a speech laden with swipes at attending media. The event, initially scheduled for April, was halted due to an assassination attempt and proceeded with significantly beefed-up security. During his hour-long address, Trump announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the United States next week. He also joked about the press, referring to many in the audience as having 'Trump derangement syndrome.' Officer Victor Gonzalez of the US Secret Service, who was shot during the original event, was honored. The rescheduled dinner faced criticism from journalists and press freedom groups who deemed it 'hypocritical' given the administration's actions against the media. Trump also quipped about a potential third term in office.
