Scientists have reacted with disbelief after President Donald Trump accused Canada of "poisoning" the U.S.'s air with smoke from wildfires and threatened sanctions.
Trump stated he told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the World Cup final that Canada must stop the fires from sending smoke into the U.S. and suggested Canada should pay damages or face tariffs. Trump previously advocated for "raking" and "cleaning" forests to prevent fires and announced 50% tariffs on Canada.
Republicans in Congress have echoed these sentiments, with Senator Bernie Moreno planning legislation to sanction Canada for alleged mismanagement of its forests. However, thousands in Canada have been evacuated due to fires that have consumed over 8.1 million acres, a significant increase from the long-term average.
Experts, including climate scientist Michael Mann and environmental policy expert Marshall Burke, argue that these severe wildfires are a symptom of the climate crisis, exacerbated by a heat dome and global warming from fossil fuel burning, rather than a lack of forest management. Mann criticized Trump's policies for worsening the problem by promoting fossil fuels and obstructing clean energy.
Lori Daniels, a wildfire expert, stated that Canada's remote boreal forests, dominated by spruce and fir trees on flammable mossy soils, are particularly susceptible to extreme fires in hot, dry conditions. She dismissed Trump's suggestion of "raking" these forests as logistically impossible and counterproductive, as it would only hasten fires. Daniels emphasized that the fires are largely driven by forces outside Canada's control, such as climate change, and that punishing Canada is unfounded and insensitive.
Daniels also noted that U.S. political rhetoric is often misinformed about the ecosystem and the scope of the problem, attributing it to climate denial and a deflection from the U.S.'s contribution to greenhouse gases. She highlighted that smoke travels across borders, affecting both countries, and stressed the need to address climate change as the priority. Adapting to a new climate reality, including using air conditioning and filtration indoors, and potentially planting different tree species, will be necessary.
