Argentine President Javier Milei is set to travel to Brazil to endorse Senator Flavio Bolsonaro's presidential campaign at an upcoming party convention. This rare endorsement from a foreign head of state aims to inject energy into Bolsonaro's bid, which has been hampered by scandals and internal divisions, and to extend a regional wave of right-wing electoral victories.
Bolsonaro's campaign has faced significant challenges, including scrutiny over funding for a film about his father and a public dispute that may have alienated women voters. Recent polls indicate that Flavio Bolsonaro is trailing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by eight percentage points in a potential second-round runoff, a reversal from earlier leads.
Analysts suggest that Milei's presence could help mobilize the party's base and consolidate a fractured field. The visit underscores a broader regional trend where conservative candidates, often aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump, are gaining traction by focusing on "order first, markets second, and a closer relationship with Washington." Flavio Bolsonaro's platform includes proposals such as lowering the age of criminal responsibility and implementing tax cuts and privatizations, drawing inspiration from leaders like El Salvador's Nayib Bukele.
Despite these efforts, Bolsonaro's campaign faces the challenge of inheriting his father's fervent supporters while appealing to a broader electorate tired of political polarization. His attempts to present himself as a more moderate figure have been overshadowed by domestic missteps, leaving momentum with the incumbent Lula da Silva.
