South Korea has previously committed to $350 billion in US investments, with $150 billion allocated to shipbuilding and $200 billion to other strategic sectors. Among the planned projects are a $50 billion Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project and a $22.3 billion natural gas-fired power plant in Texas, which will supply electricity to data centers and is expected to be operational by 2032. Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska has been involved in the development of these energy projects.
However, South Korea's trade ministry stated that no final decision has been made regarding the investment scale or commitment to the Alaska LNG project, with President Lee Jae Myung emphasizing that any investment would be contingent on commercial viability and adherence to South Korean legal procedures. The Texas facility, with a capacity of 6,472 megawatts, is the first project selected under South Korea's $200 billion strategic investment program.
