Argentina is set to launch South America's first citizenship-by-investment program, a move aimed at attracting foreign capital and bolstering the nation's economy. Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced on X that applications would open in the fourth quarter of 2026. The program offers citizenship through either a non-refundable contribution of $350,000 or the purchase of $800,000 in public bonds, according to the economy ministry.
This initiative is part of President Javier Milei's broader strategy to stabilize the country's macroeconomy and increase dollar reserves through austerity measures and incentives like the RIGI regime. The ministry stated that the program signifies Argentina's commitment to opening up and international integration.
Family members can also obtain citizenship: spouses and children aged 18 to 25 (single and without dependents) can apply with an additional $100,000 contribution, while children under 18 require a $25,000 contribution. The program was established by government decree in July 2025, with an agency to be created within the Ministry of Economy to manage applications. However, two federal court rulings in June 2026 declared the decree that allows investment to replace residency requirements invalid, and the government's appeal is now before the Supreme Court. Implementing regulations have not yet been published, and applications are not anticipated before 2027.
