Trump dismisses Russia-NATO attack fears, downplays CIA chief's Moscow visit

U.S. President Donald Trump has downplayed a visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, describing it as 'semi-routine' and dismissing speculation that it was related to fears of a Russian attack on NATO or to secure cooperation on sanctions against Iran. Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not attack a NATO country and that he was 'not concerned at all.'

Ratcliffe's visit, confirmed by Kremlin spokesperson Dimitry Peskov, was reportedly the first by a CIA director since November 2021. The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources, that Ratcliffe's purpose was to warn Russia against attacking NATO members. Other reports suggested Ratcliffe informed Russian officials that their military and economic position was deteriorating and urged negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. The Kyiv Independent also reported that the U.S. requested Ukraine refrain from striking Moscow or St. Petersburg during Ratcliffe's visit.

Separately, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Friday that the United States had provided Kyiv with information about a number of meetings in Moscow that had taken place in recent days. Zelenskiy thanked the US for the information and for the 'necessary tone' of conversation with Russia, without elaborating further.

Peskov described forecasts of an upturn in U.S.-Russian relations as 'premature' but noted that contacts through intelligence channels are often positive, even during difficult bilateral relations. Ratcliffe did not meet with Putin during his approximately eight-hour visit.

Concerns about Russian aggression in the Baltic states have been growing, with a letter from European commissioners highlighting a 'deteriorating security environment' and an 'increased frequency of airspace violations and drone incursions.'
