Todd Boehly has departed as chairman of Chelsea Football Club following the sale of his ownership stake to Clearlake Capital. The move sees Clearlake, co-founded by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, acquire full control of the Premier League club.
Boehly, along with fellow director Mark Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, each held a 12.8% stake in Chelsea. These stakes have now been sold to Clearlake, which previously owned 61.5% of the club. Boehly had held the chairman role since 2022, when the consortium he was part of purchased the club for £2.3 billion from Roman Abramovich.
Reports in August indicated that Boehly and Walter were exploring selling their stakes, with discussions reportedly stemming from a rift within the ownership group that became apparent in 2024. Boehly, who also co-owns the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball franchise, expressed his honour in serving as Chelsea chairman and confidence in Clearlake's leadership for the club's future success. He thanked the Premier League, coaches, players, staff, and fans for their support during his tenure.
