An aircrew located the teenager clinging to the overturned vessel, approximately 4 miles off the coast of St. Lawrence Island. The survivor was suffering from symptoms of hypothermia. A rescue raft and equipment were deployed, and a good Samaritan vessel, the motor vessel Northwest Explorer, assisted in bringing the survivor aboard. The same vessel recovered the bodies of the two deceased boaters and transported them and the survivor to Nome, Alaska.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, the two deceased individuals were the survivor's brother and cousin. The captain of the good Samaritan boat, Adam White, stated that the teenager told him he had been clinging to the skiff for several days after it capsized. The fishing boat had last been seen leaving St. Lawrence Island on Friday and was expected to return early Sunday morning. St. Lawrence Island is sparsely inhabited and located closer to Russia than to mainland Alaska, in waters known for being rough and frigid.
