Vantora, previously known as UP.Labs, has secured $100 million in funding from Silversmith Capital Partners. The startup lab, which was founded four years ago, builds startups for corporate clients. Its mission remains the same, but with a new name and a refined approach.
Previously, Vantora worked with corporate customers like Alaska Airlines and Porsche, and also aimed to solve problems for the broader market. Now, the firm is concentrating on building startups exclusively for its corporate partners. This includes new clients in industrial manufacturing and the oil and gas sector.
Founder and CEO John Kuolt explained that Vantora is moving towards a "proprietary M&A pipeline." This means that while Vantora will continue to develop startups for its corporate partners, who invest in and initially use these ventures, these partners now have the option to integrate the startups directly into their existing businesses. This shift has led to an increased focus on physical AI startups.
Kuolt noted that in the past, Vantora would discard ideas that were strategically important to corporate partners but too sensitive to share publicly. The new model allows Vantora to pursue these high-value, proprietary use cases, such as retrofitting industrial machinery for autonomy. This approach has enabled Vantora to "unlock big physical AI use cases," including with existing clients like J.B. Hunt, for whom Vantora developed an AI idea that the partner wanted to keep exclusive.
Vantora launched in 2022 with Porsche as its first partner and has since developed several startups for the automaker. It also has deals with Alaska Airlines, J.B. Hunt, Wabash, and TDG, the parent company of Ashley Furniture. While Vantora shares office space with venture firm Up.Partners, it operates as an independent entity, and the investment from Silversmith Capital Partners marks its first outside funding.
