SoftBank Group has finalized its $30 billion investment in OpenAI, marking the completion of the AI company's last major fundraising round. The Japanese investment conglomerate announced on Thursday that it had completed the final $10 billion tranche of its commitment.
Earlier this year, OpenAI secured $122 billion in commitments, valuing the company at $852 billion, with Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank acting as anchors. SoftBank's commitment was structured in three $10 billion tranches through its Vision Fund 2.
The final tranche was funded by an $11.1 billion high-yield corporate bond sale, which was the largest on record. This financing mechanism highlights the increasing classification of AI compute as infrastructure-grade financing, capable of being funded through high-yield debt markets. SoftBank also issued ¥1 trillion (approximately $6.32 billion) in retail bonds to Japanese investors.
SoftBank's cumulative investment in OpenAI now stands at $64.6 billion, giving it an estimated 13% ownership stake. The company has also canceled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity under its $40 billion bridge loan secured earlier this year.
This substantial investment supports OpenAI's recent platform-level initiatives, including the launch of autonomous agents, updates to its GPT models, and a new agreement with the General Services Administration for government agencies.
