- Scaleway will build an AI supercomputer in Sweden, its first outside France.
- The supercomputer will use AMD Instinct MI355X chips.
- It will be the first AMD-based AI supercomputer for commercial use in Europe.
- Scaleway chose Sweden for its low-carbon electricity and AI sector.
- AMD's ROCm software ecosystem will be used.
Scaleway, a French cloud company, announced plans to construct an artificial intelligence supercomputer in Sweden, marking its first such facility outside of France. The system will be powered by AMD's Instinct MI355X chips, positioning it as Europe's first AMD-based AI supercomputer available for commercial use by startups, AI companies, and businesses across the continent.
This move aims to broaden the availability of AI infrastructure in Europe. AMD's Instinct GPUs and its open-source ROCm software ecosystem are key components, offering an alternative to Nvidia's proprietary CUDA system. While AMD chips are already used in European research supercomputers like LUMI in Finland, this Scaleway project signifies a significant commercial deployment.
Sweden was chosen as the location due to its commitment to low-carbon electricity and its growing AI sector. Scaleway established its presence in the Swedish market in May through a partnership with telecom operator Tele2. Stefan Trampus, Tele2's head of business-to-business, highlighted the supercomputer as a strong indicator of Sweden's appeal for AI infrastructure investment.
The supercomputer will be assembled and maintained by the French firm Bull, with components supplied by Giga Computing (servers), HPE (networking), and VAST Data (storage), and cooling liquid from Motul.
