A new White House task force, led by Kupor, will focus on AI safety and coordinate communication between the government and industry. The initiative aims to balance innovation with responsible development, addressing concerns about catastrophic risks while promoting US leadership in the field. The president has also officially renamed artificial intelligence to 'superintelligence.'
Kupor acknowledged broader concerns about AI's catastrophic risks but views the task force as a means to balance these dangers while fostering innovation. This comes amid bipartisan legislative proposals on Capitol Hill aimed at addressing the risks posed by advanced AI models, further amplified by warnings from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon.
Kupor expressed confidence in the task force's path forward, stating its plan to coordinate government and industry communication on potential risks. While the renaming of AI to 'superintelligence' was seen by some as a response to public fears, Kupor asserted it was not intended to sway public perception but rather to demonstrate a commitment to responsible security, economic, and national sovereignty perspectives.
Kupor's background includes serving as a managing partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. He also leads the White House's U.S. Tech Force, which recruits AI and tech experts for government agencies. The Tech Force has hired approximately 380 individuals, with an additional 150-200 in the current hiring pipeline, and Kupor remains optimistic about exceeding the initial target of 1,000 hires.
