Saudi Arabia backs Fifa president Gianni Infantino

In its statement, SAFF welcomed Fifa's pledge to abandon the World Cup sell-off and expressed confidence in Infantino's leadership. "At this time, SAFF supports the continued efforts of Fifa president Gianni Infantino and Fifa’s leadership to restore unity across the football family and continue growing the game for the benefit of all," the federation said.

Saudi Arabia secured hosting rights for the 2034 World Cup without competition in late 2024. The country's Public Investment Fund sponsored the recent World Cup, and Aramco, its largest company, has a long-term partnership with Fifa valued at an estimated $400 million. Infantino himself is reported to have a close relationship with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The SAFF's decision to support Infantino could be influential, potentially weakening an alliance of confederations, including UEFA, AFC, and Concacaf, that had appeared to favor his critics. Qatar and Mexico have also defied their confederations to back Infantino, who retains widespread support in Africa and South America.

UEFA is now expected to end its boycott of Fifa events after receiving assurances that Infantino will not pursue the World Cup sell-off proposal. SAFF acknowledged Fifa's apology and commitment to improving its processes, governance, and transparency.
