Russia suspected of airspace violation over Finland

This event occurs amid a reported increase in Russian military flights near NATO's eastern border, which NATO countries have characterized as provocative actions designed to test air defenses. The type of aircraft, duration of the suspected incursion, and its flight path have not yet been disclosed.

This is not the first such incident; a similar suspected violation occurred on May 27, prompting an operational flight by Finland's Air Force. NATO countries frequently respond to suspicious Russian military activity with fighter jet scrambles. The suspected incursion also follows a series of recent drone incidents along NATO's eastern flank.

Earlier on August 20, Romania deployed F-16 fighter jets to intercept an explosive-laden naval drone near the Neptun Deep gas project in the Black Sea. Romanian President Nicusor Dan attributed the incident to Russia, labeling the pattern as hybrid warfare. Days prior, on August 16, a NATO fighter jet shot down a drone in Romanian airspace after it entered from the direction of Moldova.
