↳ Why This Matters

The attack highlights Russia's continued targeting of civilian infrastructure in Ukraine and underscores Ukraine's ongoing challenges with air defense capabilities against ballistic missile threats.

Key facts

  • Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv on August 20.
  • Over 10 explosions were heard across the capital.
  • Damage was reported to residential and non-residential buildings.
  • A children's hospital in the Solomianskyi district was damaged.
  • Four people were wounded in the attacks.

Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv shortly after midnight on August 20, with more than 10 explosions heard across the capital. The blasts caused houses to shake and set off car alarms in several districts, including Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi.

In the Solomianskyi district, debris fell near a five-story residential building, blowing out windows and causing a fire. A children's hospital building in the same district was also damaged, with windows blown out and cars burning on the hospital grounds. Ukraine's Air Force had warned of ballistic missiles, including Russian Zircon missiles launched from Kursk Oblast, heading toward the capital.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a strike on the grounds of a non-residential building in Sviatoshynskyi, and non-residential buildings were also on fire in Darnytskyi. Residents were urged to remain in shelters. Ukraine faces a shortage of interceptor missiles for its Patriot air defense systems, which are capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, a situation Russia has exploited by increasing the number of missiles used in attacks.
