Lebanese authorities handed over former Syrian army officer Maj. Gen. Adel Issa to Damascus on Wednesday to face charges including murder and torture. The Syrian Interior Ministry stated that Issa, a former commander of the Syrian army’s 17th Division, is wanted for intentional homicide, facilitating a felony, killing more than two people, torture leading to death, and crimes aimed at inciting civil war and sectarian strife. Issa, who fled to Lebanon after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in 2024, was detained on August 8 after visiting the Syrian embassy in Beirut. This transfer marks the first handover of an Assad-era military officer by Lebanon since Assad's ousting. Syrian authorities have been pursuing former officials accused of abuses during Assad's rule, and a Damascus court recently sentenced Bashar Assad to death in absentia.
