Russia killed four people in overnight strikes on Ukraine's industrial heartland, Ukrainian officials said Tuesday, hours before President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was due to meet US President Donald Trump at the United Nations. Moscow has intensified air strikes over the summer, targeting economic and military facilities as its ground advances have largely stalled more than 4-1/2 years into the war.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi stated on Telegram that "Russia deliberately targets businesses, farms, warehouses, railways, energy facilities and residential buildings." The region of Dnipropetrovsk, home to machine building and steel-making industries, was among those hit. A Russian missile strike on an Interpipe facility in Dnipro killed four people and wounded seven, the company said.
Ukraine's military reported striking two Russian oil refineries overnight: one in the Samara region and another in Ufa, over 1,300 kilometers from Ukraine's border. The Samara region governor said Ukrainian drones hit civilian targets, killing one person and injuring four. Both sides deny targeting civilians.
Ukraine's Air Force said the barrage included ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones. An attack on an energy facility in a neighboring region cut power to nearly 100,000 consumers in the northern Chernihiv region. Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz said at least five ballistic missiles hit idle technological facilities at an oil and gas site in Poltava, causing critical damage.
