After traditional methods like fines, warning boards, and cleanliness drives proved ineffective, the Rohtak Municipal Corporation has adopted an unconventional strategy to combat littering and public urination. The civic body has installed CCTV cameras at chronic garbage dumping hotspots and large mirrors in areas prone to public urination. This approach is based on the psychological principle that individuals are less likely to engage in undesirable behavior when they feel observed or see their own reflection.
In the initial phase, CCTV cameras have been set up at D-Park, Raj Cinema, and Sheila Bypass Chowk, with plans to extend surveillance to more locations. Warning boards have been placed to inform residents that these areas are under CCTV monitoring. In addition to imposing municipal penalties, the corporation intends to display footage of violators on LED screens at Delhi Bypass and Medical Mor. Municipal Commissioner Narendra Kumar emphasized that the objective is not solely punitive but also to foster a sense of civic responsibility among the public. At Sheila Bypass, a large mirror was installed along a wall where people continued to urinate and paste posters, aiming to deter such acts by confronting individuals with their own image.
