Key facts
- Abstract, an Ethereum layer-2 network by Igloo Inc., will shut down on December 15.
Abstract, an Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, will cease operations on December 15. The team cited a limited DeFi ecosystem, low liquidity, minimal institutional adoption, and a smaller budget compared to competitors as reasons for its closure. This marks the second Ethereum L2 to announce a shutdown recently, following Paradigm-backed Blast.

The closure of Abstract highlights the challenges faced by specialized layer-2 networks in achieving sustainable growth and adoption within the competitive blockchain ecosystem, particularly in bridging consumer appeal with institutional viability.
Abstract, an Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, is set to shut down on December 15. The team announced on X that the network's growth was hindered by a constrained decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, insufficient on-chain liquidity, limited institutional engagement, and a smaller budget compared to its competitors. The team stated that operating a chain focused exclusively on consumer crypto proved unsustainable as a standalone model.
Users are required to move their assets off the Abstract network before the shutdown date using its Migration Hub or native bridge, which has a three-hour delay. Any funds not bridged off by the deadline will become inaccessible. Abstract's engineers will assist projects built on the network in migrating to other chains.
During its operation, Abstract reported processing over 325 million transactions, facilitating more than $6 billion in decentralized exchange volume, and generating over $40 million in ecosystem revenue. It also saw the creation of more than 4 million Abstract Global Wallets, with brands like Red Bull Racing and Disney utilizing the chain for audience engagement.
Abstract is a ZK-rollup, a type of layer-2 solution that bundles transactions and verifies them on the Ethereum mainnet using zero-knowledge proofs. It was envisioned as a platform for consumer-focused crypto applications targeting everyday users, aiming to replicate the mainstream success of Pudgy Penguins' merchandise and social media presence.
This shutdown follows closely on the heels of Blast, another Ethereum layer-2 network backed by Paradigm, which also announced its wind-down due to operating costs exceeding revenue.
