Porsche is discontinuing its Web3 initiative and the associated Pioneers Circle community, a move that comes less than four years after the project's inception. The automaker announced the decision via a post on X, stating that the project had evolved beyond its initial technological focus to encompass broader community activities.
The Porsche 911 NFT collection, launched in January 2023 with an intended supply of 7,500 tokens, will continue to exist on-chain and remain with its holders. However, Porsche will transition the community's Discord server to a read-only format and cease active updates on the project's X account.
Minting for the NFT collection was halted prematurely at 2,363 tokens following complaints regarding pricing and a perceived lack of utility. When Porsche initially revealed its Web3 ambitions in 2022, Lutz Meschke, then deputy chairman, expressed a "long haul" commitment, envisioning potential applications in the metaverse, purchasing experiences, and supply chains.
