Key facts
- Petrobras is testing Cardano blockchain for tracking low-carbon fuels.
- The projects involve sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Petrobras' renewable-content Diesel R.
- Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio are collaborating on the research.
- The SAF project uses a Book-and-Claim mechanism for environmental benefits.
- Cardano's blockchain will record origin, recipient, and claim time for SAF benefits.
- Digital checkpoints will track Diesel R through its supply chain.
Brazil's state-controlled oil company, Petrobras, is exploring the use of Cardano's blockchain technology for two pilot projects focused on tracking low-carbon fuels. The initiatives aim to enhance transparency and simplify the verification of environmental claims associated with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and a renewable-content diesel product known as Diesel R.
In collaboration with the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio, Petrobras is developing systems to record and verify the environmental benefits of SAF. This project utilizes a Book-and-Claim mechanism, which separates the environmental attributes of SAF from its physical use. Cardano's blockchain will log the origin, recipient, and claim time of each environmental benefit, ensuring documentation transparency and preventing the same benefit from being claimed multiple times. Passengers will be able to use a dedicated application to calculate and claim benefits linked to their travel by providing flight details.
