DogeOS, an application layer designed to bring smart contract functionality to Dogecoin, has launched its public testnet. This trial version of the network allows developers to test applications before a mainnet launch, where real money will be involved.
The DogeOS platform is EVM-compatible, meaning it can support smart contracts, wallets, and tools built for Ethereum. Fees on the testnet are paid in DOGE, the native cryptocurrency of the Dogecoin network. The project is founded by the team behind the MyDoge wallet and operates as a separate layer on top of the Dogecoin blockchain, preserving the integrity of the base layer.
Several teams are already developing on the DogeOS testnet. These include Superposition Finance, a lending protocol; Derps, a perpetual exchange; USDoge, a stablecoin project; Snag, a prediction market aggregator; and PlaysOut, a mini-game publisher planning Doge-themed games.
Jordan Jefferson, founder and CEO of DogeOS, stated that the launch signifies Dogecoin's evolution from a digital asset to a broader ecosystem. Timothy Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation, emphasized that DogeOS aims to add utility above the base layer while maintaining its purity.
The development comes as Dogecoin has experienced a significant price decline from its all-time high, with some analysts noting it remains in a bearish trend despite the launch of Dogecoin ETFs. The DogeOS team has previously submitted proposals to enhance the base layer, though changes to Dogecoin itself are a slow process due to its lack of formal on-chain governance.
