A police officer from Seoul's Dongdaemun Police Station has been arrested on charges of possessing, fabricating, and distributing sexually exploitative images, including those of people he knows. The arrest followed months of investigation into a distributor of such content in a Telegram chat room.
During a forensic analysis of the officer's seized mobile phone, authorities discovered approximately 2,600 deepfake images, about 1,600 images sexually exploiting children, and around 1,300 illegally filmed images. The officer is accused of using artificial intelligence to create approximately 400 nude images of individuals he knew between March 2022 and July of the current year, distributing dozens of these fabricated images within the Telegram chat room.
Officials noted that the officer had previously been investigated for a similar offense, receiving a suspended indictment before joining the police force. The Dongdaemun Police Station stated that the officer has been placed on standby and relieved of duty, with an official adding that detailed confirmations of suspicions and circumstances could not be provided.
