Andrea Pirlo has withdrawn his candidacy for the head coach position of the Italian national football team following a backlash over his association with a Russian betting company. Pirlo, who is currently the head coach of Dubai United in the UAE, had been widely expected to take the role, but his ties to Fonbet, a Russian betting firm, drew criticism from Italian politicians.
Politicians such as Carlo Calenda argued that individuals promoting Russia after 2022 should not hold national office. Pina Picierno, a vice-president of the European Parliament, suggested that Pirlo's potential appointment went against the cultural and ethical implications of supporting Russia while Ukraine was being bombed. Pirlo stated that assigning a political meaning to his collaboration with Fonbet meant ascribing to him beliefs he has never expressed.
